  • Merry Christmas! (A few days late)

The weekend before Christmas, my friend Craig flew up to visit us. While he was here, we walked around Old Sacramento and took him to the capitol building. On the grounds of the capitol, there was a tall Christmas tree and many orange trees. Since we’ve heard that stolen fruit is the sweetest, Craig had to find out (shamelessly in broad daylight). Verdict - the proverb was proven correct!

The first night, we taught him Settlers and the second night, we added Cities and Knights. Craig learned the rules pretty quickly, but he’s also very easy to convince. I remembered that from college (how could I forget the nose and foot shaving incident?) and used it to my advantage to win! (Much to James’ annoyance, which only fed my glee.) As an interesting side note … Craig drank 7 hot chocolates in 2 days. Also while Craig was visiting, we went to Karen/Paul’s holiday dinner party. I especially liked the Asian noodles – delicious!

Craig left Monday morning, and James’ parents came to visit that afternoon. This was the first year Zachary got the concept of Christmas. (And by that, I mean the gifts, Santa, counting down till the 25th etc …not the religious part or the spirit of giving.) That meant no sleeping in! … Zachary got up at ~6:30am, jumped into our bed and asked,”Is it TUESDAY yet?!”

As the only child in the household, once again, it was adults hovering over him with cameras and video recorders while he opened gifts. Some of his loot included a puzzle where he can practice writing, a Fisher-Price digital camera, a super hero cape, Douglas (wooden train), lots of books (especially beginner reader ones), shoes/socks, frog cup holder for the car, Thomas pajamas, a big barrel of Lincoln Logs, 2 games (Hisss and Rat-a-Tat Cat) , Wedgits, and the complete Discovery Toys marble run set.

He enjoyed all his gifts (as opposed to ignoring most of them like last year) – and was especially excited about the marble run! So far, James sets it up and Zachary only triggers the marbles, but I’m thinking over time, he’ll start building it himself. (Just like with the train tracks … we used to build them for him while he ran the trains, but now he builds the tracks and wants us to crawl on our hands and knees with the trains! )

I got James a Cake CD and a computer part. He got me super warm slippers, silver earrings, 2 card games, The Office season 3, and a bottle of too-expensive lotion that was on my Amazon wish list as a placeholder (oops.)

Hoping you also had a happy holidays – and wishing you and your loved ones a healthy and joyous new year!  (My next post will be in 2008; Wow, time flies! )

  • Happy Christmas Eve!

Last weekend we went to Alex’s house for a cookie decorating Christmas party. It was lots of fun – and the turkey sandwiches for lunch were delicious!

After the party, Dana came to our house … Dave joined us in the evening, and we had our annual gift exchange. James recieved a wine pump, and I got a cupcake/cake carry container. Both very useful! We got them the latest Entertainment book (to encourage Dana to meet up with friends for lunch despite having a baby at home!) and a children’s book (“If You Give a Mouse a Cookie – one of Zachary’s favorites) for Jason.

I hitched a ride with Dana/Dave to Joe and Sara’s annual Christmas party that night. (James opted to stay home with Zachary). We participated in the last potluck dinner, crazy white elephant gift exchange, and carol singing in their ‘old’ house – they just upgraded to a huge new home and all future parties will be held there!

One Sunday, we celebrated Jonathan’s birthday at Bouncopolis! A big room, packed with 4 different bounce areas – Zachary loved it! James and I even got in on the action, running around and chasing Zachary in the bounce houses. Happy 5th Birthday Jonathan!

The week was pretty fun too … slower days at work and lots of cancelled meetings meant that I could catch up.. and even joke around/chat with coworkers. On Friday, before the long weekend, I went to Zachary’s daycare Holiday Cantata, where his class sang ‘Jingle Bells’ and ‘We Wish You a Merry Christmas.’ At first, Zachary was teary with eyes downcast, but halfway through the first song, he looked up and started singing! I wish I had my camera! And of course, my cell phone was out of batteries.  If one of the other parents forwards me any pictures, I’ll post them!

  • Warning: December is a super busy month, so there will be lots of pictures!

Two Saturdays ago, we went to Austin’s Curious George themed birthday party at Funtastic. Toddler gyms are great locations for parties, and Zachary had a great time. Happy 2nd Birthday, Austin!

Afterwards, Dana came over to help decorate our Christmas tree. While Dana and Zachary hung ornaments, I put Jason in a santa hat and took a few pictures that I knew Zachary wouldn’t tolerate anymore.

In the evening, we went to our annual neighborhood progressive dinner. Zachary was finally old enough to play with the other kids. He wasn’t quite dexterous enough to complete the crafts on his own though! The older kids tied 25 mini candy canes to a thick ribbon for counting down to Christmas. One of our neighbors outdid themselves with a snow machine on their front porch!. Zachary LOVED it. All the kids were giddy with excitement!

The next evening, I had a dinner and playdate at my house. I actually made a real meal too – picked out a recipe online and made tortilla soup with homemade taco seasoning!

The following Friday, I hosted a holiday party for my team at work. It was a potluck, and I roasted a turkey and baked a honey ham. We played Guitar Hero and also some board games. It was fun to get together with my coworkers outside of work; I have a really good team!

Saturday morning, we went to Intel to take a picture of Zachary with Santa. There was a room set up to look like a theater (with a popcorn machine in the back) playing classic holiday cartoons. There were crafts to do in the cafeteria, but they looked complicated, so I just had Zachary color a picture. There was also a room of vendors for people who wanted to browse or shop. I ended up buying 2 samosas (yum!) and putting in a custom order for a daycare nap blanket. To make the line for Santa more bearable, they had a clown walk around doing magic tricks.

After lunch, we met up with Bill and his family at Picture People at the mall to take pictures. Bill and Elena flew in from New York to visit his parents in California. I got to meet their new son Ryan for the first time – very cute toddler (he just turned one!) Happy 1st Birthday, Ryan!

Our boys played with trains (a lot!) and tried to figure out which present belonged to them. They could both recognize their name – but they got confused by gifts that were “To Zachary, From Will” or vice versa!

We had a  nice ham dinner and exchanged gifts at Bill’s parents’ home. And the next day, they came over for a spaghetti lunch at our house. The boys were still obsessed with trains, but we did get them to run around outside for awhile. Elena and I hit the outlets, where she picked up some great deals on kids winter clothes … 3 big bags of fleece and thicker outfits that would be sold out in New York, but lingering on the sale racks in sunny California. It was great seeing them again!

After they left, we went to my friend Karen’s house for a Christmas party. Zachary  made gingerbread cookies and decorated graham crackers. (We were supposed to make houses out of them, but it looked way too goopy and messy to try!) I work with Karen’s husband, so I saw some of my coworkers there too.
