Month: January 2006

  • Kicking off this weekend, James’ new TV came in Friday. A 56″ Samsung DLP. I was supposed to get it for his birthday but he ended up just using his own credit card since we technically share money. We joke that the TV is just for decoration. Seriously, we watch about 30-60 minutes a week! That night, we drove down to Santa Rosa  to visit James’ parents and high school friend, who has a 3-year-old. The next day, we all went to the Charles Schultz Museum. It was geared towards adults, but there was an outdoors play area and a room for kids to draw. After the museum, we went to lunch and then the gift shop, where James’ dad bought the boys coloring books. When we got home, I started feeling tired so I lay down while James’ parents read books to Zachary. We stayed for a nice spaghetti dinner, and then headed home. It turned out I caught Zachary’s fever.

Zachary loves to watch me draw. It reminds me of when I was little and how I always wanted my dad to draw. He also says “More! more!” when I sing – and anyone who’s ever heard me, knows I’m tone deaf. Kids totally put their parents on a pedestal … at least toddlers do!

Zachary’s latest thing is an obsessions with symbols – numbers and letters. He is constantly looking at license plates and clothes with letters/numbers on them. He knows 1-12 (from a clock obviously!) and he’s really interested in letters. He knows OWXZBCMITGAP, maybe more. In the picture below, I was yelling out letters for him to stand on (Z). Two syllable words are coming now – a long wait after the fluke word “carrot”, my nonverbal baby can now say “lelow” for yellow, “nana” for banana, “turta” for turtle, and ”purpa” for purple. (Proof that he is indeed Asian, notice the lack of L sound at the end of his words.) Some less impressive words these past 2 weeks include “may” for mail, “nigh” for nine, “duh” for duck, “lee” for leaf, “blah” for black, and “seh” for six.

Sunday was pretty low key … James’ painted our walk-in closet. It’s a really, really light greenish blue. But, heck, it’s a closet and the paint cost $2 (retailed $25 but the color came out wrong so it was on clearance). We also got a new housekeeper. She is awesome – I was really impressed by her work, and she came on short notice on a weekend. I tipped her 20-25%, and she gave me a hug! So appreciative!

On the grandparents front. My grandmother (who is in her 90s) had hip surgery and is recovering well. She is getting around-the-clock care from a few of her children, including my dad. Unfortunately, James’ grandmother has liver cancer and is getting weaker. She decided not to fight it and just let nature take its course.  She is in excellent spirits though – she has such a positive outlook.

  • The Cabbage Patch arrived. It looks nothing like the advertisement. It has black curly hair instead of brown – and instead of the hole for the pacifier, the doll has teeth. But once I got it, I didn’t have the heart to return it. Plus it’s very useful for getting Zachary to do things. For example, Zach won’t brush his teeth (hand covering mouth) – until I turn my back on him and start brushing the doll’s teeth. And then, Zach comes running to me with his mouth open.

Friday after work, we went to a coworker’s house for dinner. He (and his wife) made homemade pasta. Apparently not all pasta comes in cardboard boxes.

Saturday morning , we picked up a Little Tykes play structure/slide for $15 from a craigslister. I’m glad I didn’t spend $100+ on a new one because so far, it’s mostly trains and frogs going down the slide. Right after, I met up with 3 of my mom friends (and their toddlers) at the Jumping Jacks gym open house. The kids got to run around and jump on trampolines and throw balls etc. – which was perfect because it was rainy outside. That night Dana/Dave came over to play Seafarers – I lost miserably.

Today (Sunday) we took Zach to the Folsom zoo. It’s actually a sanctuary for animals that can no longer survive the wild. They had animals like chickens, bears, tigers, wolves, cats, raccoons, ferrets, cats … kind of a mix of pet store, farm, backyard, and zoo. Later, we went to Dana/Dave’s house for pizza and games. I took Zach home early since I have to work tomorrow – James stayed to play games since he’s taking tomorrow off (daycare is closed for MLK day). I might try to sneak out early – I’m hosting book club tomorrow evening.

Aside from a hair cutting fiasco, Zachary was on such great behavior this weekend. He even played independently a few hours – which is extremely rare for him.

  • Zachary turned 21 months this week! Wow … 3 more months and I’ll have a 2 year old! This weekend was relaxing. Friday night, James went over to some friends house to play Settlers, while I stayed home with Zach … Zach stayed up until 10pm.  The next morning, I held a play group at my house … the kids loved the ride-on Thomas. One would ride while the other “pushed.”

Sunday, we went to another play group (from the twins’ daycare.) We met at the park – it was fun … and we got home just in time to go out for dim sum. At dim sum, everyone used chopsticks, so Zachary asked for a pair too. He tried to use chopsticks to eat! Kids pick up so much from their surroundings.

I’d like to share my fun purchase of the week … a $7.98 baby stroller from Walmart. Zachary loves to take his froggie out for a walk – which means I get exercise too! I highly recommend it for both girls and boys.

Here are Zachary’s new words for the week: “tee” for three, “se-tze” for lion, “uh” for up, “da” for down, and “gee” for James. He is now combining words … “more” + a noun. Which is amazing to me because well, I’m his mom… but he’s actually slower than most toddlers. You should see the other children younger than Zachary talk at daycare. There’s a girl that can speak in full sentences. I wonder if she is irritated by all the less verbal toddlers - as in, ”I’ve got to get out of the baby room! I can’t hold a decent conversation with these kids.”

And ugh. The couch I ordered in September is not in yet. And the Cabbage Patch has not arrived either. I feel like I have been swindled.

  • Happy New Year!

This week, my sister Alice came to visit for a day. We pulled Zach out of daycare since Alice could watch him. James and I came home early that day (hope my boss is not reading this), and we went to Chuck E. Cheese. Unfortunately, I forgot my camera, so no pictures. And after Zach went to sleep, we played Settlers.

We had a low key New Year’s weekend, which was exactly what I wanted. I was feeling sick the week before – major headaches. The first day of vacation I took a 5 hour nap, and woke up completely renewed! Of course, since I was sick, we didn’t plan anything for New Year’s eve. Our friends bailed us out and invited us over for dinner. They have a son just 6 months younger than Zachary (as of today, they are in the same daycare class!). Their little guy got a huge train table and the big Thomas set from Costco for Christmas. That kept the boys (including husbands) entertained most of the night. After a nice homemade dinner, we put our boys to sleep and played Settlers.

The next day I invited some friends over for a chili dinner and more Settlers. Now I also have Seafarers (thanks Dana!) so I’ll be planning more game nights in the near future!

       <- hugs, not drugs

At a work holiday party a few weeks ago, I met a woman with 2 yr old twins. Her husband works with my husband, and they are new to the area (moved from the Bay Area.) We got together on Monday so that the boys could play. When I came to the door, the twins called me Elmo. Their mom said it was because I was wearing red.

On the learning front, Zach can recognize numbers 1-12 and colors too. I’m surprised because we never formally teach him – Zach has never seen a flash card in his life, and I verified they don’t do any structured teaching at daycare. I guess all the reading helps (he can sit for 400+ pages at one time.) His new thing is that he loves to group similar things together. This morning, I got a handful of toys from him while I was eating breakfast. I dumped it on the table in front of me. Upon further inspection, I realized there was a connection between the items. A wooden green train (Percy). A puzzle piece with Percy on it. And a puzzle piece of the number 6 … which is Percy’s number. It’s almost creepy.
